The benefits of using problem solving or educational software are, giving and educator a way to integrate technology into a lesson especially if it is given to you through your school or district. The trick is trying to adapt this cut and dry soft ware to the 27 to 30 smiling faces sitting in front of you and hoping they gain from it what you hope. When choosing an education educational software there is many things to consider such as where did it come from? Has it been evaluated by some trusted source and taking those into consideration you still have to do your homework and take the time to try the software taking into consideration the technological need of the lessons already in place as well as those to come. Could you add this to a future lesson or do you have to write an original lesson plan to simply incorporate this particular piece of software. And is that part of what you are trying accomplish in your classroom. The key is to be care in what you implement just because it is the newest thing does not mean it is right for your classroom at this time and no one can make that decision but the teacher. Other thing to take into consider too is weather you even have time to add something else to your plans and still be ready for the 9 week assessments that no matter how hard you prepare your student seem to jump up form no where. You may only be able to use this for of soft ware fore part of your class based on ability and level of intemperance depending on the software.
To get ready when students are using computers is making sure you have enough either in the classroom or the lab and how far in advance does the lab have to be booked. Also for someone with limited technology experience it may be a good idea to buddy teach a lesson using technology with someone you may have abettor understanding of what is required. The students and wells as the other teacher may enjoy not having to do all the ground work for a lesson but working as a team can allow for collaboration among co workers an well as make the assignment more enjoyable for the students and in my experience if the students are enjoying what they are doing they do a much better job and gain more form it. To ensure equal access to all students with three computers is to extend the amount of time you require for the assignment using small groups and allowing groups to use the computer while the rest are working on a different part of the lesson that they can do indecently while you focus on computer questions, it may also be helpful to sent who ever the tech person at your school is an email letting them know what you are doing and what time and ask them to stop by just in case (you can never have to much help around) and as always be ready for it not to work and have a plan B.
